Get to the Root of Self Care

What do you think about all of this "self care" talk ?

Personally, I like the fact that we are encouraging women to focus on self care but I also believe that we often don't go deep enough with it.

Self care is not about planning a girls night out or getting your nails done.

Hear me out.

I was working with a client and while we were in the process of setting goals, I asked her what she loved doing. [She was seeing me for adrenal fatigue]

There was a pause....and then she answered, "I don't know."

Her entire waking hours were spent focusing on her kids happiness, her career, her parents...and she forgot what it took to make her feel content.

Adrenal issues (exhaustion) is more common these days because of 'stress levels' due to our incredible number of opportunities/choices and the idea that we CAN have it all.

But weak adrenals will make for a bumpy ride through peri-menopause and can eventually lead to burnout.

While you can heal adrenal fatigue using diet and supplements...you won't get completely better until you tackle 'lifestyle factors' like how you think about self care.

Self care can be about 'seeking out a part time job versus your career gig while your kids are young', leaving a job you hate, doing less, taking the supplements, getting yourself a gym membership, skipping your kids sporting event to be alone, or confidently declaring which restaurant you really want to go to...without the guilt.

The key is to pay attention to areas that you may be compromising your health and wellness for others.

If you need a little support on self love, here are my favourite essential oils:

Bergamot

  • Bergamot Essential Oil is the embodiment of self-love & self-worth. This oil helps us process and release the fear of not being good enough, emotional pain, restraining habits and opens us to love and self-acceptance. Bergamot teaches acceptance of your uniqueness, self approval, joy, and resulting self-confidence.

  • Just add a few drops to your diffuser and inhale. Try mixing with Lavender, Vetiver, any other citrus and Geranium too.

Geranium

  • Inhale this calming & balancing oil to bring a sense of togetherness and softness if you are feeling anxious, overwhelmed or frazzled. Geranium will help stress and depression melt away, bringing you to a place of happiness and peace.

  • Geranium has a deep floral aroma with both citrus and herbaceous tones. We call this a 'centering oil' because after inhaling it mentally pulls you into your body and makes you feel comfortable and confident. Great when you're feeling low, highly emotional or scattered.

  • Geranium is one of the best hormone balancers for women. What does this mean? All the glands in the Edocrine System secrete hormones. Our brains send messages to these glands and hormones are secreted that keep us alive and in good health. This does not only include our reproductive systems, but emotions, mood, sleep & blood pressure,

  • That's why Geranium is so important to self care, it helps keep our emotions in check, keeps us sleeping well and have a healthy, balanced body.

  • Geranium blends beautifully with Bergamot, Clary Sage, Frankincense, Lavender, Neroli, Patchouli, Rose & Vetiver.

Rosemary

  • Rosemary is a powerhouse oil, and perfect for use in self care.

  • It's sharp aroma is beneficial to clearing brain fog, improving memory and giving a boost of energy. Rosemary is considered the oil of learning.

  • Use Rosemary topically (mixed with a carrier oil) to reduce muscle pain, increase circulation and improve breathing.

  • Rosemary makes a nice addition to a restorative bath. Try mixing it with Geranium and Frankincense.

Ylang Ylang

  • Helpful with stress and anxiety. ylang ylang is scent is useful for depression or when trying to cope with anger.

  • It’s great in blends intended to focus upon happiness & gratitude. Ylang Ylang is also considered an aphrodisiac.

Frankincense

  • The King of Oils can be used daily to feel calm and spiritually connected and is excellent for brain function and immune boosting, two things that are definitely part of self care. The molecules are just small enough that they can bypass the blood brain barrier. What this means is that it can calm inflammation in the brain. Think about that! An inflamed brain is not happy.

  • Apply it (in carrier oil) to your wrists or forehead, depending on how you feel that day.

  • Use during meditation or yoga, or for a moment of meditation anywhere.

Forgive Blend

This might be at the core of what’s keeping you stuck. Have you forgiven yourself? For the time you’ve spent at work away from kids, for the negative ‘trait’ you passed down, for the time you lost your cool with the kids, the vacation you took without your mother in law, the gift you bought for someone but kept for yourself, the negative thoughts you’ve had about others or yourself, the list goes on. :)

This blend incorporates Spruce, Bergamot, Juniper Berry, Distilled Lemon, Myrrh, Arborvitae, Nootka, Thyme, and Citronella essential oils. It’s a powerhouse blend.

A favourite kit to support women is the Aroma Essentials Enrollment kit.

You’ll get Adaptiv (for stress), Balance (anxiety), Citrus Bloom (happiness), Cheer, (happy perfume) Serenity (sleep), Easy Air /Breathe (airways) Northern Escape (grounding), On Guard (immunity), Peppermint (energy), wild orange (happy), and a diffuser!

Remember, you can't pour from an empty cup.
