Wintering: The Beauty of Slowing Down in January
What Happens When We Don’t Slow Down
Pushing through January at full speed can lead to burnout, poor decision-making, and even physical health issues. Stress hormones, like cortisol, remain elevated, affecting everything from digestion to immune function to hormone balance. Many of the women I work with come to me because they’ve ignored the cues to slow down, and now they’re dealing with fatigue, bloating, mood swings, and a lack of energy.
The key to breaking this cycle is learning to embrace the season you’re in—not just the external season, but your internal one, too.
How to Embrace a Slower Pace
Slowing down doesn’t mean stopping. It’s about finding intentional moments to nurture your mind, body, and spirit.
Here are a few ways to embrace wintering this January:
Reflect on Your Goals with Compassion
Instead of diving into a massive to-do list, spend time journaling about what truly matters to you. Align your goals with your values and the season you’re in.
Nourish Your Body and Soul
Focus on warm, grounding foods, herbal teas, and self-care practices. This isn’t the time for restrictive diets or extreme workout regimens—it’s a time to restore your body.
Prioritize Rest
Listen to your body’s cues. If you’re tired, allow yourself to rest. This might mean going to bed earlier, taking a nap, or even scheduling unstructured time into your day.
Reconnect with Nature
Even in winter, getting outside can be grounding. Take a mindful walk, feel the crisp air, and notice the stillness around you.
Surround Yourself with Support
Wintering doesn’t mean isolating. Share your intentions with a supportive community or coach who can help you stay aligned while honoring your energy.
